Iberostar Grand Hotel Bavaro

I fell in love with the Iberostar brand in Mexico at the Iberostar Grand. The service, food, and premises were top notch and I realized that they truly understood what I needed on a vacation. While there, my husband and I met a few guests and they all raved about Iberostar Grand Hotel Bavaro in the Dominican Republic. I couldn’t imagine things getting any better, but I had to try it. In addition, my brother went to the Iberostar Grand Hotel Bavaro in DR and told me that I would really enjoy it! My next vacation seemed like an obvious choice. So, I waited for the airfare to go down, and I booked a 5 night, 6 day trip to the Iberostar Grand Hotel Bavoro in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

Quality: We had a really good time at this resort. I wasn’t too crazy about the drink options. I am not an alcoholic drinker so I usually enjoy frozen drinks or a mild Sangria. The only tasty non-alcoholic drinks that I could find was the “Tiger” and the “Miami Vice.”

However, the food was amazing! Let me repeat, the food was AMAZING! Other than the buffet by the pool, almost every restaurant and the other buffet (inside) had delicious food. I would avoid the buffet by the pool because the food is sitting out for an extended time, there are flies in that area, and it just doesn’t taste as great as the other buffet. Trust me, it’s worth the walk, so grab your towel and take 20 more steps to the inside lunch buffet.

My favorite place to eat for dinner was also the buffet. I know, I told you to go there for lunch. However, they change the choices for dinner. It was probably one of the best buffets that I have ever eaten at in my life. The quality of the food was excellent and the chefs are so talented. We ate at the buffet on most nights because we didn’t have to make reservations and we knew that we would enjoy the food.

The resort has specialty restaurants that you can choose from to try a different type of cuisine each night. Book your reservations at the specialty dinner locations before you arrive to DR or on your first day because the options are limited.

The Japanese hibachi restaurant was pretty tasty as well. It was my favorite specialty restaurant. There is a restaurant right by the water that served surf and turf. The food is not that great but the experience makes the trip worth it. We actually bonded with the other tables with a good laugh when we saw the odd selections and interesting presentations. I ordered a fish entree and the server chiseled away at the fish for about 5 minutes to present and cut the fish out of some creative layer that it was baked in. The lady beside me stated that it looked like someone had gotten a pedicure at my table and left all of the dead skin on the table. Surprisingly, she was right. That is exactly what it looked like.

(Room picture to the left) The rooms are very nice. They are not as large as the rooms at Iberostar Rose Hall Suites Jamaica, but they are a good size. The beds could have been more comfortable. I think that they place two smaller beds and put them together.

Service: The staff starts to recognize you after a day or two and engage in conversation or invite you to do activities. The staff is very friendly and they feel like family by the time you approach the end of your vacation.

There were a few things that could be improved with the service at the hotel. The entertainment staff can be aggressive when asking you to mark them highly on surveys that they pass around to the guest towards the end of the trip. You quickly realize that these cards impact their compensation or recognition drastically. In addition, it can take a while to get your mini-bar restocked. We asked for our mini-bar to be restocked with water 3 times before someone came.

Cleanliness: The resort is beautiful! Like all Iberostars, the landscape and art is European inspired. It is very classy and modern.

Price: moderate to other resorts of this caliber

Experience: The resort is perfectly located. We had easy access to so many excursions. Overall, even though I wasn’t crazy about the drinks and the room, the food made up for it! The service was outstanding and the entertainment staff kept us busy all day.

Tips: Ask for a room facing the pool. They tried to place me in an outer room, facing the parking lot and I asked them to switch my room. Who wants to stare at a parking lot for 6 days! Some people take a taxi to the Hard Rock hotel at night, we didn’t get to go but we were told that it is worth the trip. There are better beaches in Punta Cana than at this resort, so about 95% of the people stayed at the pool. Anyway, that is where they have the drinks, games, and all the fun anyway.

Would I recommend it: Absolutely! This was my first time in the Dominican Republic and I enjoyed myself. I did like the Iberostar Grand in Mexico and Iberostar Suites in Jamaica better, but I think they are all great in their own unique way.
