Thompson Chicago: Where The "Cool Kids" Hang Out

The Thompson Chicago is definitely a hotel that can stand in its own category. If social groups were compared to hotels, The Thompson Chicago would be where the “cool kids” are hanging out. It’s very modern and contemporary, and it feels like you’re in a northern environment. The panels are made of wood and the hallways are dark. The art on the wall is very eclectic and almost daring. In the politically correct country that we live in today, it is surprising to see some of the art choices. The hotel manages to have a young and hip vibe, while maintaining a very professional establishment.

Quality: The hotel quality is at a four-star hotel level. It is higher than your traditional Marriott or Hilton hotel. However, I would not rate it as high as the most luxurious hotels in our country.

Cleanliness: The hotel is very clean. The only problem I ever encountered with the cleaning crew is that they cleaned my room while I was out, even though I placed the “do not disturb” sign on the door. Everything was in place when I arrived. I just did not like the idea of not having the opportunity to place my personal items away. The bathroom is pretty cool. It has a white and black theme. The shower is huge and could probably fit an entire family at one time.

Service: The attendants at the front door are very helpful and extremely friendly. The front desk staff are also hospitable. I think that my husband left his room key card in the room about three or four times, and they issued him a new one with a smile each time.

Price: The Thompson Chicago is rated among the top hotels in Chicago, yet the price is lower than most of the highly rated hotels.

Experience: Overall, I enjoyed my time at the Thompson Chicago. It was nice having my Chicago experience there! The hotel is not in the heart of downtown, but you can easily put on your walking shoes and head towards all of the main Chicago attractions. My husband and I were able to walk or take the BIG BUS everywhere. The only time that we used private transportation was at night to go to dinner.

Extra Information: There is a restaurant on the first floor of the hotel. The pictures online look great! However, I didn’t get a chance to try it since I was only there for the weekend. I wanted to try restaurants that were rated higher and within walking distance, so we ate at a few of the surrounding restaurants.

There was a person on our floor smoking what smelled like marijuana. My husband and I could smell it when we were in the hallway for the majority of the weekend. I don’t think that it is a usual circumstance for this hotel, but I wasn’t surprised. This is an “eclectic” hotel.

Would I recommend it? For a weekend-get-away to explore Chicago, I thought it was a good choice. However, if I wanted to have a luxurious experience or a romantic weekend, I would choose another location in Chicago.
